The A side, “The Prizefighter Beat,” is a scorching ska stomper encouraging everyone to get groovin’ to the beat.
On the B side, “A Fistful of Credits” reimagines the main theme from Disney’s The Mandalorian as a menacing Spaghetti Western reggae number, harkening to a style made famous in the 1960s by legendary acts such as Lee Perry and the Upsetters.
“The Prizefighter Beat” traces its roots all the way back to the band’s origins in 2006. One of the very first Prizefighters songs written, the unofficial theme song had been pushed into the dustbin of time. Resurfacing every few years as a what-else-do-we-know-how-to-play encore, the song quickly became an inside joke between the band and their fans. “Play the Prizefighter Beat!” became a crowd mantra on the same level as that dude who yells about Freebird from the dancefloor.
In late 2019, a longtime fan and friend of the band was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. As someone who has been cheering us on since 2006, and the most vocal supporter of playing “The Prizefighter Beat,” the band wanted to make good on 14 years of this odd infatuation. The band cleaned up the song’s loose ends, patched up the holes, and finished actually writing the entire song, and the result is sparkling, stomping dance track finally ready to step out from the shadows and into the spotlight.
